Before you go to Hong Kong or Macau: check your visa
- Hong Kong and Macau have separate immigration — you leave mainland China and must be allowed to re-enter.
- Residence permits for semester-long students are usually multiple-entry, but some student visas (for example single-entry X2 visas) are not. Check the “entries” on your visa or permit and ask your international office before you book.
- Hong Kong and Macau entry rules depend on your nationality — check the official immigration websites.
- Carry your passport and residence permit; you cannot cross with a photocopy.
Best Day Trips
Hong Kong (香港)
- Why go: Victoria Harbour, the Peak, dim sum, hiking trails and an entirely different city atmosphere
- Getting there: High-speed rail from Futian to West Kowloon in about 15–20 minutes, or Metro Line 1 to Luohu and the MTR East Rail line
- Time needed: A long day or a weekend
- Tip: Hong Kong uses its own currency (HKD) and the Octopus card — Alipay HK and bank cards also work widely
Guangzhou (广州)
- Why go: The capital of Cantonese food, plus Canton Tower, Shamian Island’s colonial streets and the Pearl River at night
- Getting there: High-speed rail from Shenzhen North, about 30–40 minutes
- Student cost: Tickets about ¥80–100 each way
- Time needed: A full day
Macau (澳门)
- Why go: Portuguese-era squares, the Ruins of St Paul’s and famous egg tarts
- Getting there: Ferry from Shekou, about 1 hour
- Time needed: A day or an overnight

Dapeng Peninsula (大鹏半岛)
- Why go: Stay in Shenzhen but escape the city: beaches, a Ming fortress and coastal hikes

Tips for trips out of Shenzhen (tap to expand)
- Book trains as soon as they open (15 days ahead) for weekends and holidays.
- Check which station your train uses — Shenzhen North, Futian and Shenzhen Station are far apart.
- Border crossings are busiest on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons — travel off-peak if you can.
- Bring your passport for every trip, even inside Guangdong.
