Futian (福田)
- Character: The government and business centre, laid out along a central axis from Lianhuashan down to the Civic Center and Ping An tower
- Why students go: Free museums, the evening light show, COCO Park’s bars and malls
- Ideal time: After dark
Nanshan & the Science Park (南山)
- Character: Home to Tencent, Shenzhen University and endless start-ups, with Shenzhen Bay Park on the doorstep
- Why students go: Where many students live and study — cafés, malls at Houhai and the bay for evening runs
- Ideal time: Weekday evenings
Shekou (蛇口)
- Character: Shenzhen’s most international corner: Sea World square, seaside promenades and the ferry port
- Why students go: Bars, international food and ferries to Macau and Hong Kong
- Ideal time: Friday night
OCT (华侨城)
- Character: Overseas Chinese Town — theme parks next to leafy residential streets and the OCT Loft creative park
- Why students go: Gigs, galleries and design shops at OCT Loft; theme parks for a big day out
- Ideal time: Weekend afternoons
Luohu & Huaqiangbei (罗湖 · 华强北)
- Character: Old Shenzhen: Dongmen’s pedestrian streets, the Luohu border and Huaqiangbei’s towers of electronics stalls
- Why students go: Cheap shopping, street food and phone accessories
- Watch out: Check quality carefully and bargain politely in markets
Longgang & Dafen (龙岗 · 大芬)
- Character: Eastern Shenzhen, with newer campuses (including CUHK-Shenzhen) and the Dafen painting village
- Why students go: Cheaper rent and a quieter pace
- Ideal time: Any afternoon

- University Town, Xili (大学城): the Tsinghua, Peking University and HIT graduate campuses — green and quieter, Metro Line 5.
- Longgang: CUHK-Shenzhen and other newer universities — cheaper, but 45–60 minutes from the centre.
