At a glance

HIT is one of China’s leading engineering universities. Its College of International Education handles inbound exchange admission and international students, and most exchange students study and live on Campus 1 on West Dazhi Street, right on Metro Line 1. (HIT’s Weihai and Shenzhen campuses are in different cities and run separately.)

Before you arrive

You need to be a full-time degree student at a partner university with a valid exchange agreement, with a recommendation letter from your home university. HIT’s own page asks for applications at least four weeks before the programme; partner fact sheets give earlier dates.

1. Recommendation — your home university recommends or nominates you.
2. Online application — on the HIT application system: passport page, enrolment certificate, transcript, language proof, recommendation letter and the Foreigner Physical Examination record.
3. Admission — the admission letter is posted to your home university.
4. Visa — X2 for under 180 days, X1 for longer. See Before You Go.
5. Before arrival — send your flight details about 10 days ahead; your dorm is confirmed about 5 days before arrival.
6. Arrival — check in at the dorm service desk, then register with the college.

HIT’s Fall 2026 semester started on 31 August 2026; winter break starts on 11 January 2027.

Which campus?

HIT Harbin has three sites in Nangang. Campus 1 is where exchange students are based; the others matter only for certain schools.

Accommodation

• Where: the international student apartment on Campus 1; rooms are assigned randomly.
• Cost: HIT’s pages give different figures — ¥600 per bed per month in the accommodation rules, ¥800–1,000 per bed per month on 2027-intake programme pages — excluding electricity and internet. Source ↗
• How to book: reserve in advance; on-campus housing is not guaranteed. At check-in you pay at least one semester and set up a prepaid electricity account.
• Off campus: only with the college’s permission, a checked lease and police registration within 24 hours of every move.

Academics

• Course list: no public English course catalogue — ask the college or your host school for English-taught options. Programme-dependent
• Registration: course selection in the first week of the semester; courses from other schools are allowed.
• Grades: HIT sends your grades to your home university after each semester.

From the airport

• Harbin Taiping (HRB): no metro — take an airport bus (about ¥20; routes change seasonally, some stop near Metro Line 1) or a taxi/DiDi (about an hour).

From the train station

• Harbin Station — Line 2 one stop to Museum, then Line 1 two stops to HIT.
• Harbin West — Line 3 to Yida Second Hospital, then Line 1 to HIT.
• Harbin East — Line 1 direct to HIT.

First-days checklist

1. Check in at the dorm service desk: pay for housing and fill in the Foreign Resident Registration Form.
2. Police registration within 24 hours of arrival (and after any move).
3. Buy the compulsory insurance.
4. Attend orientation at the College of International Education.
5. X1 holders: medical check and residence permit within 30 days.
6. Choose courses in week one.

Around campus

• University belt: Metro Line 1 through Nangang is lined with campuses, cheap restaurants and night markets.
• City centre: Central Street is about 15–20 minutes away by metro.
• Winter gear: buy boots and a proper parka locally if you need them.
