Before you arrive

Your home university must have a valid exchange agreement with WHU and email the nomination to inbound@whu.edu.cn. You then apply online and are reviewed by SIE and your host department.

  1. Nomination — your home university emails WHU.
  2. Online application — on the WHU application portal: application form, passport page, transcripts, enrolment certificate and language proof (IELTS 5.5 for English-taught or HSK 4 for Chinese-taught courses; none for Chinese language).
  3. Admission — WHU sends the admission letter and JW202 to your home university.
  4. Visa — X2 for stays under 180 days, X1 for longer (then a residence permit). See Before You Go.
  5. Insurance — buy the compulsory Chinese health insurance before arrival.
  6. Arrival — register at SIE on the registration date; late registration only within 7 days with approval.

Which campus?

WHU is one large campus split into faculty areas. Most exchange students live and register in the Arts & Sciences area.

Arts & Sciences area (文理学部)

  • Where: Luojia Hill, 299 Bayi Road, Wuchang, beside East Lake
  • Who studies here: Humanities, social sciences and sciences (economics and management, law, Chinese, foreign languages, maths and more), the SIE Fengyuan dorms and the Luojia Gate.
  • Metro: Line 8 Xiaohongshan (Exit A, about 500 m to Luojia Gate) or Line 2/8 Jiedaokou.
  • To the centre: Line 2 runs direct to Hankou; journey times vary.

Engineering

Engineering area (工学部)

  • Where: North-east part of campus, near East Lake
  • Who studies here: Power and mechanical, electrical, civil engineering, water resources, urban design.
  • Metro: Line 8 Xiaohongshan (Exit B).

  • Where: South side along Luoyu Road
  • Who studies here: Computer science, remote sensing, geomatics, cybersecurity and AI.
  • Metro: Line 2 Guangbutun or Jiedaokou — right at the south gates.

  • Extras: electricity at ¥0.60/kWh. Bedding is not provided.
  • How rooms are given: no advance booking — choose, pay and get your housing registration form at SIE registration.
  • Off campus: allowed if you tell SIE in advance; register your address with the police within the legal time limit or risk a fine.

Rates come from SIE’s accommodation page (undated, live in September 2026); your exchange agreement may cover housing differently.

Academics

  • English-taught courses: listed on the admissions site; Chinese-taught courses are chosen in the WHU course system after arrival.
  • Registration: during orientation week, with help from the SIE Teaching Office.
  • Credits: up to 30 credits per semester; 1 credit = 18 class hours. Grades are out of 100 (60 is a pass).
  • Add/drop: usually in the first 1–3 weeks; courses you register for but do not attend are recorded as zero. Programme-dependent
  • Transcript: request it from the SIE Teaching Office after your last exam — usually ready about a week later.

26 dining facilities; student halls take the campus card only. Halal options at several halls.

📚 Libraries

Four libraries, with the main one in the Arts & Sciences area; seats can be reserved.

📶 Wi-Fi

WHU-STU in dorms and WHU-WLAN in teaching areas; free for the first week, then ¥20 a month.

📦 Parcels

Eight official pick-up stations, including one next to the Fengyuan canteen.

🌸 Cherry blossom

In March the campus fills with visitors who book online; your student card lets you in.

Arrival

From the airport

  • Wuhan Tianhe (WUH): Metro Line 2 direct to Jiedaokou or Guangbutun, then walk or take a taxi to Luojia Gate. WHU offers no pick-up — show your admission letter to gate security.

From the train station

  • Hankou Station — Line 2 direct to Jiedaokou.
  • Wuchang and Wuhan stations — Line 4 to Zhongnan Road, then Line 2 to Jiedaokou; Line 8 Xiaohongshan is closest to Luojia Gate.

First-days checklist

  1. Buy the compulsory health insurance before arrival (confirm the current price — sources give ¥400–500 per semester).
  2. Register at SIE in order: Admission (passport, JW202, admission letter), Finance, Student Affairs (insurance), Teaching Office (photo) and Housing.
  3. Register your residence with the police within 24 hours.
  4. X1 holders: health check, then a residence permit at the Wuhan Immigration Service Center.
  5. Collect your campus card, set up Wi-Fi and attend orientation and course selection in week one.
  6. Bring at least ¥5,000 in cash plus a Visa or Mastercard.

Around campus

  • Jiedaokou and Guangbutun: just south of campus — malls, cheap restaurants and bubble tea.
  • East Lake: walk out through the Lingbo Gate to the greenway.
  • Groceries: on-campus supermarkets take the campus card.
  • Health: the campus hospital, and Zhongnan Hospital by the medical campus.
