Wuhan is three old towns — Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang — facing each other across the Yangtze and Han rivers. It is big, busy and built around student budgets: breakfast costs a few yuan, the river ferry costs ¥1.5, and the Hubei Provincial Museum, the East Lake greenway and the riverside parks are free. Best months: March–April for cherry blossom and October–November; summer is famously hot.

- University areas: Luojia Hill and Jiedaokou (Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Technology), Optics Valley (Huazhong University of Science and Technology and many others), Guizishan (Central China Normal University).
- Going out: Optics Valley walking street, Jiedaokou for cheap eats and KTV, Chu River Han Street, Jianghan Road and the Hankou riverside for bars, Jiqing Street for late-night crayfish.
- Weekends: cycle East Lake, ride the ferry, or take a fast train to Changsha or Yichang.

Getting around Wuhan (tap to expand)
- Metro: 13 lines, fares ¥2–9; pay with the Alipay or WeChat transit code.
- Ferry: Wuhan Guan (Hankou) ↔ Zhonghua Road (Wuchang), ¥1.5, 6:30–20:00 — the cheapest river cruise in China.
- Airport: Tianhe (WUH) — Metro Line 2 to the city in about an hour (¥6), or a 12–14 minute intercity train to Hankou Station.
- Rail: three big stations — Wuhan (high-speed to Guangzhou and Beijing), Hankou (Yichang, Enshi, Shanghai) and Wuchang. Check your ticket.
